Wedgewood

Story
Artisanal honey nougat, handmade on our family farm
In 1999, our Mum, Gilly Walters, started making her unique artisanal soft honey nougat for guests at music concerts held at our family home. Spurred by rave reviews, she began selling her nougat at the local farmer's market — and from there, Wedgewood Crafted Confectionery was born.
Twenty-five years later, we still make our Mum's nougat the same way she did: in small batches with great care on our farm in the KZN Midlands, not far from the majestic Drakensberg mountains. We also created the world's first nougat biscuit, and we continue to bake these from our small bakery right here in South Africa, keeping a very particular eye on quality — just the way Mum did.
Our confectionery is always made using the finest ingredients. Our honey comes from ethically harvested, sustainably managed hives through long-standing partnerships with African beekeepers. Our eggs are hand-cracked fresh in our Makery each morning, and we use 100% local farm butter from farmers we know and trust. No preservatives, no artificial colours or flavours — ever.
Giving back to people and planet
Through our Planet Bee Pledge, we give 1% of our turnover to community projects. This supports endangered species conservation with Wildlife Act, early childhood development through Singakwenza, and plastic waste interception via The Litterboom Project — making Wedgewood proudly Plastic Neutral.
In 2021, we launched our Handmade Hat Box Project, employing people with disabilities living in our local community. Sli and Sphume, our two full-time team members, handcraft up to 100 beautiful boxes a day — each one a showcase for our nougat and a symbol of meaningful, local employment.
Sustainability at our core
We've built our own nut cracking facility on the farm to secure the finest macadamia nuts for our nougat. Our macadamia nut shell burners fuel our hot water, and every part of our operation — from our single-origin, fair-trade coffee to our sustainably harvested Zambian honey — is chosen with the planet in mind.
