Celebrating van Gogh
Van Gogh’s Starry Night Over the Rhone (1888) was painted a year before he entered the asylum at Saint-Rémy in May 1889. At the time, he was still renting the “Yellow House” in Arles, full of energy and experimenting with night scenes.
The canvas glows with reflections of gas lamps stretching across the water, creating golden streaks that dance on the rippling surface. Van Gogh captured both the tranquility of a starlit night and the vibrancy of modern light. This was also the period when he invited Gauguin to join him in Arles, hoping to create an artist community in the South of France. For about two months, the two worked side by side
— they inspired each other, but also clashed.
